We’re so excited that D. Marie Prokop joined Team Spider Road Press this fall. She writes, she plays, she sings, she knits, she parents… Her creativity knows no bounds! Plus, she makes a mean apple butter. Take a minute and get to know this skilled and sweet TX talent…

Welcome, D. Marie! What excites you about working at a woman-centered, indie publisher?

Women writers and independent publishers both inspire me with their grit and ambition. I consider it a high honor to work alongside women and promote them specifically. I’m drawn to stories crafted with a specific voice and born from a unique experience and/or worldview, written skillfully by those who must tell them.

What do you enjoy most about the writing process?

The thrill of discovery. Whether it’s from a character revelation, an unexpected plot twist, or a discovery of my own heart and soul, I’m enamored with the “ah-ha” moments of writing.

What are your two favorite books by women writers? We know it’s hard to pick just two.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins!  Also some of my favorite female authors include Madeline L’Engle, Pearl S. Buck, and Agatha Christie.

What kind of fiction (& or poetry) are you writing these days?

I finished the first novel of a new series. It’s a historical fiction YA book called The Good Shepherd. (It’s set in 1905 Boston, a city peppered with werewolves, wardens, orphans, and a Persian cat named Mr. Flufferbutter.)

As our resident singer-songwriter, we wonder what music you listen to while you write?

I’m sorry to disappoint everyone, but I rarely write with music on! When I do, I listen to soundtracks or classical music because I get distracted by the lyrics.

We can understand. If a song is too good, it might indeed be distracting.  Now, how would you describe yourself as a writer & creator?

I enjoy stories with riveting adventures, spiritual insights, and thought-provoking cultural or social critiques. I gain both education and camaraderie from my local writing community. I write YA, science fiction, adventure, fantasy, horror, poetry, and middle-grade fiction. As s singer-songwriter and avid fiber artist/knitter, I love to create in multiple media.

I’ve been published in Texas’s Emerging Writers: An Anthology of Fiction, and Texas’s Emerging Writers: An Anthology of Nonfiction by Z Publishing House, various anthologies by Inklings Publishing, and I have two stories in the collection, Hair Raising Tales of Horror.

That’s a good Halloween read!

Yes! I am also excited to be included in the flash fiction bonus section of Kate Spitzmiller’s forthcoming novel, Companion on The Ash.

Everyone at SRP is looking forward to Kate Spitzmiller’s compelling novel…  D. Marie, you’re known as a caring and supportive member of the Houston writing community. Are you a native Houstonian?

I was born and raised in Pennsylvania. I’m former Yankee, but I like living here, along with my loving family, my feisty cats, my beloved ukulele, and tons of yarn!

Thank you! Readers, look out for unique creative work from D. Marie Prokop on this blog and beyond.
