Happy Holidays to our lovely and faithful SRP Readers, Writers, Designers, and Friends!
2017 has been an incredible year for Spider Road Press. In our last blog post of the year, we wanted to share a few of our favorite highlights.
While Hurricane Harvey was, undoubtedly, a devastating tragedy, one of the silver linings was seeing writers, from all across the Houston area, come together for support and catharsis. Gulf Coast Journal put together outreach efforts for expression, Writespace hosted open mics for writers and, here at SRP, we organized the “Hurricane Harvey – Healing Through Creativity” collaborative, haiku project.
One of our favorite poems submitted was from Celeste Budwit-Hunter:
Destruction heartbreak
Hope arrives on waves of Love
in flat-bottomed boats
Another moving highlight from the year was Leslie Archibald reading her Spider’s Web Flash Fiction Prize-winning piece, Sherry Baby, at our SRP 4th birthday celebration. A talented, emerging Texas writer, her piece was chosen by national judges via “blind” readings. What a serendipitous surprise to have a local writer win the contest!
This truly poignant piece will be published, as a special bonus, in “Companion of the Ash” – a historical fiction novel by Kate Spitzmiller that SRP will be releasing in 2018. To find out more about this year’s Spider’s Web Flash Fiction Prize contest, see our website submissions page.
Last, but not least, we had the opportunity to attend and vend at some amazing and diverse local events like Writefest (co-hosted by Houston Writers Guild in 2018) the Bayou City Book Festival (where Jody had the chance to meet Rebecca Nolen, Executive Director of Houston Writers House), Comicpalooza, and the Thorn and Moon Magickal Market (where we shared a table with SRP contributing writer Chantell Renee). Make sure you check out each of these events and organizations in 2018.
Thank you for your support in helping make 2017 a stellar year for Spider Road Press!
Gratefully,
Patricia Flaherty Pagan, Jody T. Morse, & the rest of the SRP Team
Thank you for elevating the literary quotient in Houston. Wishing SRP all the best for a stellar 2018!
Congratulations on an exciting and productive year!
