Judge Julia Rios and Team Spider Road Press were pleased to receive a wealth of high quality entries from a diverse field of writers! We celebrate the hard work and skill of all of those who entered this year’s flash fiction contest. And the winners are…

“The Book You Find When You Really Can’t Afford to Get Pregnant” by Jeana Jorgensen is the winner of the 2018 Spider’s Web Flash Fiction Prize! Ms. Jorgensen has won $300, a trophy, and print publication in a special bonus section of our upcoming 2018 title, Companion of The Ash by Kate Spitzmiller. Jorgensen crafted an intriguing, complex female protagonist and highlighted important social themes against the backdrop of a dark future. All in fewer than 750 words! Kudos to her. We can’t wait for our readers to experience her piece in conjunction with Ms. Spitzmiller’s feminist historical fiction novel.

Four honorable mentions were chosen from among the outstanding entries. These honorable mentions will be published here, on the Spider Road Press blog, over the next three months. Check back to read these precise, vivid stories…

“It Took Adrienne Ninety-Seven Minutes to Write This Email” by Laura McGehee

“How He Got That Way,” by Lara Kristin Herndon

“Give Them What They Want” by Daniel Cobourn

“Egest Leporidae” by A.A. Balaskovits

Many thanks to all those who entered. Keep taking risks. Keep writing flash! We hope that you will enter the fifth annual Spider’s Web Flash Fiction Prize contest next year.
